Central Valley unemployment rates were down on a monthly basis in August, according to the latest data from the state Employment Development Department.

The Fresno County unemployment rate for August was 6.6%, down from 7.2% in July and below 6.7% a year ago.

On a month-over-month basis, farm employment grew by 1,800 jobs and nonfarm employment rose by 1,600.

Farm employment grew by only 100 jobs on an annual basis, while nonfarm industries added 10,200 jobs, led by educational and health services with 5,200 new jobs.

Kings County’s unemployment rate for August was 7%, down from 7.8% in July and above 6.7% a year ago.

Kings County farms shed 100 jobs on a monthly basis, while nonfarm employers added 400 jobs.

On an annual basis, farms lost 400 positions while nonfarm employers added 600 new jobs.

Madera County’s unemployment rate was 6.5% in August, down from 7.3% in July and above 6.4% a year ago.

Month to month Madera County added 800 farm jobs and 900 nonfarm jobs. On an annual basis, farms added 100 jobs and nonfarm industries gained 1,000 positions.

Tulare County’s unemployment rate was 9.2% in August, down from 10% in July but above 9% a year ago.

Tulare County farms added 2,400 jobs on a monthly basis, while nonfarm employers added 2,900.

On an annual basis, farms shed 200 positions while nonfarm employers added 2,700 jobs.

The statewide unemployment rate held at 4.1% last month.
